Hello Melbourne ! Vol 1

That is a city I never thought I would like; but I actually loved it!

Melbourne is extremely impressive; beautiful modern skyscrapers next to perfectly preserved old buildings, clean and peaceful parks and of course the beautiful Yarra River that crosses the city gracefully.

Starting from getting an easy tourist visa process your only concern should be not to carry any food in your bags, as its definitely not allowed ! We took a direct 11 hour flight from Colombo, Sri Lanka with Sri Lankan airways and we landed safely in Melbourne. The airport is also great, very modern and the finding our way out was a very fast route.

We rented an apartment in the CBD area very close to the Victoria Library and the City Hall. That area is also famous for the Universities and its possibly the most lively area together with the Yarra River. I adore organised and clean cities and Melbourne is one of them! Our apartment was on the 54th floor so we had a pretty good view as well.

Melbourne is a city where you can walk safely but it also has excellent public transport. People are friendly and nice and they seem to enjoy their city. There is a huge variety of restaurants and bars with cuisine from all over the world in addition to quiet parks small cafes.

Tip: Walk and explore the city and when tired rent a bike and see the parks

 The National Gallery

I loved spending time at the National Gallery. It hosted amazing exhibitions including the latest exhibition of Yayoi Kusama.

“Inside Yayoi Kusama’s Flower obsession 2017. The proliferation of flowers gradually covers all surfaces transforming the domestic space into a spectacular environment”

Few metres from the Narional Gallery is the famous Yarra River. This area will remind you of Dubai Marina in Dubai. It is a beautiful walk with malls, restaurants and bars. It is a famous spot for locals and tourists and the home for many street artists. First time I saw a man giving “Free Prayers” next to the river!

Eureka Tower
Eureka Tower towers over Melbourne and is the tallest building in Melbourne and second tallest building in Australia. Built in 2006, the height of this building is 297.3 meters. Until the 2010, when the Burj Khalifa was finished, it was the tallest building in earth. Take some time and visit this its observatory where you can see the time from above. We took the chance to be at the Edge .. and we survived it too!

The legacy of Dom Perignon

Once upon a time there was a Benedictine monk named Dom Pérignon (1638–1715).

dom-perignon-monk

Dom Pérignon was also a cellar master at the Benedictine abbey in Hautvillers. Back in 1670, he started to blend grapes in order to improve the quality of wines and deal with a number of their imperfections.  Then he placed corks, which were fastened to bottles with hemp string soaked in oil in order to keep the wines fresh and sparkling. In addition to that used thicker glass in order to strengthen the bottles as many of them would explode.  The development of sparkling wines as the main style of production in Champagne occurred progressively in the 19th century, over one century after Dom Pérignon’s death.

The first ever vintage of Dom Pérignon was made in 1921, and was only released for sale in 1936.  The first 300 bottles of the Dom Pérignon 1921 were the Simon Bros & Co, a company that imported Moët in the United Kingdom.  That was enough! The wine got immediate attention in the marketplace and immediately the market of the United States placed their orderes. One of the first customers was James Buchanan Duke, the billionaire who had founded the American Tobacco Company; he ordered 100 bottles for himself.

From that order, 17 bottles were sold at an auction at Christie’s in New York City in June 2004 where Doris Duke, the billionaire’s daughter, had kept them in her cellar.

Until the 1943 vintage, Dom Pérignon was produced from regular vintage Moët & Chandon Champagne that was transferred to the special 18th Century-style bottles after extended cellaring.  It was thus effectively an oenothèquerelease of Moët & Chandon Vintage Champagne in a different bottle.

But from the 1947 vintage, Dom Pérignon has been produced separately from the start.  The number of bottles produced in each vintage is not precisely defined. As a result, the final composition changes every vintage.

Dom Perignon Rose 1959 Vintage Reaches a Record Price of 84,700 Dollars at a Historic Rare Champagne Auction in New York

According to Richard Geoffroy’s Manifesto : “Dom Pérignon expresses its first plenitudes after seven years in the cellar.”

As of 2010, the current release of Dom Pérignon is from the 2002 vintage and the current release of Dom Pérignon Rosé is from the 2000 vintage.

The current 2010 winemaker is Richard Geoffroy, who has been Chef de Cave for Dom Pérignon since 1998.

All the Muses of Woody Allen

There is no doubt that Woody Allen is one of the most important film-makers in the modern history of cinema. His myth is added by his “obsession” with his Muses.

Yesterday, Woody Allen presented his latest film Café Society in the Cannes Film Festival and everyone was absolutely stunned as he arrived with Blake Lively and Kristen Stewart.

In his 50 years career Woody Allen chose to work with women of great personality. Some say, these actresses were a safe choice for Allen, but Woody Allen seem to choose the right girl for the right role.

From Diane Keaton in the classic film, Manhattan and Tea Leoni as Ellie from the movie Hollywood Ending, to Scarlett Johansson as Nola Rice in Match Point and Marion Cotillard as Andriana in Midnight in Paris.

Last but not least, the all time muse of Pedro Almodovar, Penelope Cruz as the passionate Maria Elena in Vicky Christina Barcelona.

“The project drawing on the dialogue between art and nature is designed on a conversational level to create a large scale artificial reef to aggregate local fish species and increase marine biomass whilst, on the other hand, to raise awareness to current threats facing the worlds oceans. The main installation, The Rubicon features a group of 35 people walking towards a gate, a point of no return or a portal to another world.”

You may think its scary but the true numbers of the people who died trying to reach Europe the past two years are beyond scary. This is a tribute to the lost souls; the people who escaped from the war zones, put their lives in danger and they got lost in the sea.

Harrods Xmas Window Display Tribute

No introduction needed!

There are a million reasons why London is the ultimate city escape destination to celebrate the Xmas holidays.  Harrods always make the trip to London more enjoyable especially during the festive season.

Every time I am more impressed by the creative window displays.. but Harrods is a destination on its own.

harrods_new

Located in the prestigious Knightsbridge has 330 departments covering one million square feet of retail space.

Harrods founder Charles Henry Harrod first established in 1824. In 1985 was purchased by the Fayed brothers who drove Harrods to the 21st century successfully. Since May 2010 Harrods is part of the Qatar Holdings and continues its great success story.

Harrods is the undeniable landmark of London. Apart from the branded clothes, the visitors can shop food & vine. Indulge in the Oyster Bar or in the Champagne bar.

The 2015 theme is Cinderella and Harrods just revealed the story on the window display !

A story with a happy ending ! Merry Christmas everyone!
